On 9 March, The Selwyn Institute for Ageing and Spirituality hosted a visit to Selwyn Village by a delegation led by the Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Auckland’s longest-standing and most important Chinese partner city.
Facilitated by Auckland Council’s Global Partnerships and Strategy team, the visit to New Zealand focussed on community development/services and aged care, and the delegation also met with representatives of the Retirement Villages Association and Aged Concern, amongst others.
At Selwyn, the group was greeted by Hilda Johnson-Bogaerts, General Manager of The Selwyn Institute for Ageing and Spirituality, Ross Endicott-Davies of Selwyn Village management team, Jejson Jose, the Foundation’s Clinical Quality Manager, and Terry Jacobs, Care Lead of Sarah Selwyn Hospital.
Presentations were given on a range of residential aged care topics, such as our model of care, clinical care procedures and policies and village operations, with Dr Michal Boyd, Associate Professor and Nurse Practitioner of the University of Auckland’s School of Nursing, also addressing the audience on gerontology and New Zealand’s approach to the care of the older person - all of which were simultaneously translated by the group’s Mandarin-speaking interpreter!
The visit then concluded with a tour of Sarah Selwyn Hospital.
Such interest by overseas groups highlights our experience and reputation for quality care provision, enabling us to knowledge-share and educate other interest groups in the latest thinking and innovative approaches in the care of ageing people.
